About Me.

Kaylie Hughes is a printmaker whose practice investigates the urban environment of Manchester, focusing on spaces encountered through everyday movement. Having lived in the city throughout her life, her work considers how these environments shape perception and experience. She is particularly interested in pedestrian infrastructure, including paths, roads, arches, and tunnels, where the contrast between industrial architecture and contemporary development produces complex spatial relationships.

Through subtle distortion and controlled alteration, Hughes reconfigures familiar spaces to foreground their formal and structural qualities. Rather than functioning as documentation, her work reframes these environments, drawing attention to locations that are typically overlooked despite their constant use.

Her practice is grounded in mark-making, repetition, and pattern. She primarily works with intaglio printmaking, particularly drypoint on metal plates, alongside lino printing. These processes enable a precise and iterative approach to line, texture, and surface, supporting the construction of carefully structured compositions.
